CENTER FOR THE FUTURE OF ARIZONA TO PRESENT AT CHAMBER’S ECONOMIC FORECAST LUNCHEON
Gallup Poll, State’s Seven Key Initiatives to be Presented by Pat Beaty
GILBERT – The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce will hold an Economic Forecast Luncheon on March 27th featuring strategic planning and marketing consultant Pat Beaty of the Center for the Future of Arizona as she presents The Arizona We Want 2.0.
According to Beaty, capturing a complete and accurate picture of Arizona is a difficult task. In reality, we are a state of contrasts. We have vast, beautiful open spaces and yet we’re one of the most urban states in America. We have a significant number of senior citizens yet we also have one of the youngest populations in the nation. We have high educational aspirations, yet low investment and performance. We recognize the need for a diverse, balanced economy that will yield a larger number of high-paying jobs, yet population growth and housing remain our dominant economic identity. We will be one of the first states in the nation in which our minority population will be the majority, yet we are not adequately educating the younger members of our new majority for success in the economy of the future.
“How do we turn our contrasts into strengths as we chart a clear and coherent way forward to ensure an economically viable state for future generations,” Beaty asks.
Beaty will present the latest Gallup Poll results and discuss Arizona’s seven key initiatives and how you can make a difference at the Chamber’s Economic Forecast Luncheon to be held on Wednesday, March 27th at Villa Siena in Gilbert. Registration and lunch begins at 11:15 a.m.; program begins at 11:30 a.m. General admission is $35; Chamber member admission is $20.

Chamber, San Tan Ford Present Fourth Annual Event to Raise Funds for Local High School Seniors
GILBERT – The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce announces only 12 entries remain unfilled for participation in the Fourth Annual Scholars Golf Tournament to be held on May 9th at the 18-hole Seville Golf and Country Club in Gilbert.
Sponsored by San Tan Ford, the Fourth Annual Scholars Golf Tournament will benefit the Chamber with partial proceeds to fund scholarships for local high school seniors. Last year, the Chamber awarded $4,000 in scholarships to students participating in the Scholars Program in the Gilbert Public Schools and Higley Unified School Districts.
“We hope to raise $7,000 in scholarship money this year and we are on the right track with the tournament entries,” said Kathy Tilque, president and CEO of the Gilbert Chamber. “With the support of San Tan Ford and our volunteers, each year’s event gets bigger and better with more support from our members and the community.”
According to Tilque, the scholarships are awarded to high school seniors in the Higley Unified and Gilbert Public School Districts. Students’ applications are reviewed and selected by members of the Chamber’s Small Business Council.
“These scholarships are provided to students who demonstrate improvement in their academic careers and who have faced some sort of hardship while in school,” Tilque said. “These are the students who may not easily qualify for other academic scholarships but who have demonstrated commitment to their education and overall perseverance.”
The Fourth Annual Scholars Golf Tournament will be held on Thursday, May 9th at Seville Golf and Country Club in Gilbert. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. and a silent auction and awards ceremony will follow the tournament. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 16, 2013
GILBERT – The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce reports more than $520,000 in closed business between Chamber members during the organization’s third quarter and more than $2.2 million in closed business year-to-date.
This report follows a previous fiscal year report of more than $1.4 million in closed business between July 2011 and June 2012. The closed-business figures are reported on a weekly basis by participants in the Chamber’s five referral teams – industry exclusive groups representing more than 150 local businesses who work to build strategic partnerships with one another and understand the products and services provided by each member of the group.
“Our members continue their enthusiasm and dedication for supporting each other’s businesses and it’s really reflected in these figures,” said Annette Sellers, Business Development Director of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce.
According to Sellers, each referral team is further divided into marketing focus groups. “Every week, you get an in-depth view of another business and have the opportunity to learn the culture, mission and values of another organization, and every fourth week you give an insider’s view into your business.”
The Chamber currently operates five referral teams as part of the organization’s strategic plan to build a referral-based membership culture. According to Sellers, members are encouraged to actively build other members’ businesses while the Chamber provides the environment and resources to support growth and development.
“The businesses participating in these referral teams are invested in each other’s success and have embraced the concept of building businesses not just by doing business with one another but also by identifying needs of others and equipping themselves with the knowledge to refer other businesses to meet that need,” Sellers said.
The recorded results of closed business reflect only those figures reported by businesses participating in the Chamber’s referral teams and do not include those businesses not participating in such groups who also receive Chamber-to-member or member-to-member referrals.

Innovative knee resurfacing procedure reduces downtime, pain in patients
MESA, Ariz. (March 27, 2013) – Sandra Loper, 49, a former athlete from Gilbert, Ariz., was enjoying a leisurely walk at a racetrack when she heard a popping sound in her knee. Loper went about her daily activities, thinking the pain would eventually subside.
“I can tolerate quite a bit of pain,” explained Loper. “This was extreme.”
As a result, Loper gave physical therapy a try and began knee exercises at home in hopes to be able to complete simple tasks—like walking her dog. When she didn’t notice any improvements in her condition, Loper was referred to Brian McWhorter, D.O., an orthopaedic surgeon on the medical staff at Mountain Vista Medical Center, who suggested MAKOplasty® partial knee resurfacing, an innovative alternative to total knee replacement.
MAKOplasty is a minimally invasive treatment option for adults living with early to mid-stage osteoarthritis that has not yet progressed to all three compartments of the knee. MAKOplasty is less invasive than traditional total knee surgery and is performed using RIO®, a highly advanced, surgeon-controlled robotic arm system. Mountain Vista Medical Center is currently the only hospital in the East Valley to offer MAKOplasty.
The morning following surgery, Loper was up and walking around. Now, just six weeks after surgery, Loper has returned to all of her normal daily activities. In addition to a more rapid recovery than total knee surgery, MAKOplasty offers patients the potential for reduced pain, less implant wear and loosening, a smaller scar, improved range of motion and ultimately, a more natural feeling knee.
“It’s truly incredible what this technology enables surgeons to do,” said Dr. McWhorter. “MAKOplasty takes partial knee resurfacing to a new level of precision, making patients feel more comfortable and getting them back to their daily routines quicker.”
According to The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the opportunity for early intervention is important, as osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and a leading cause of disability worldwide.
To make an appointment with an orthopeadic surgeon at Mountain Vista Medical Center, please call 1-877-924-WELL (9355).

GILBERT – San Tan Ford and the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce have partnered to name April 2013 as Drive It Home Month – a campaign to remind Gilbert residents about the importance of shopping locally and keeping tax dollars in our community.
“Whether you’re buying dinner for the family or a vehicle to take them to dinner in, we hope you will think about how important it is to purchase from businesses in our town,” said Tim Hovik, owner of San Tan Ford in Gilbert. “You’re not only contributing to a healthy local economy, you’re paying sales tax that goes right back into your community.”
According to Hovik, San Tan Ford paid almost $1 million in sales tax to the Town of Gilbert in 2012.
“It’d be great if everyone serviced and purchased their vehicles at San Tan Ford, but the real message is to think Gilbert, shop Gilbert, just keep it in Gilbert,” Hovik said.
Sales tax dollars are a critical revenue source for Gilbert. They fund ongoing daily operations including parks and recreation programs, public safety workshops, library materials, and more.

Residents Encouraged to Seek Gilbert Businesses for their Medical Needs
GILBERT – The town’s Shop Gilbert taskforce announced today the release of the third video in a series to remind residents of the opportunities for seeking medical facilities, products and services within the Town of Gilbert.
“The Town of Gilbert offers many exceptional health care options. Whether fighting cancer, conducting research, or serving patients, our Life Science, Bio-Med and health care organizations have some of the most advanced facilities in the country right here in Gilbert,” said Mayor John Lewis.
“In the past decade, Gilbert’s health care industry has made a name for itself as one of the most advanced and well-planned medical communities in the nation,” said Kathy Tilque, president and CEO of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce. “This video will remind residents to first seek Gilbert-based medical facilities whenever possible.”
Last month, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center received the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence from Healthgrades and, in 2012, Banner Gateway Medical Center was named to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospital Ranking at No. 12.
“In addition to award-winning hospitals, Gilbert is home to medical practices, urgent cares, health clinics, pharmacies, and equipment suppliers,” Tilque said. “By staying in Gilbert for these services, residents will further contribute to our town’s tax base which, in turn, supports our beautiful community.”
The Shop Gilbert campaign includes four video segments with emphasis on different industries, all of which contribute to the town’s tax base. The videos were scripted by Tad Peelen, an owner of Joe’s Real BBQ and member of the Shop Gilbert taskforce, and were produced by Gilbert-based 4th Wall Productions.
This newly-released video will be aired on the Town’s government channel 11 and can be viewed on the Shop Gilbert website, http://www.ShopGilbertAz.com The w.ebsite includes a listing of Gilbert businesses currently enrolled as supporters of the Shop Gilbert initiative.

### Gilbert Leadership Class XXI Selects Artist for Heritage District Mural
Contact: Jackie Terry, (602) 295-1142
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 8, 2013
GILBERT, ARIZ. – Participants of Gilbert Leadership Class XXI announced that it has selected seasoned artist and Gilbert Visual Art League member, Mary Opat, to craft a mural design that will help the class bring art to the downtown Gilbert area while preserving the Town of Gilbert’s rich history around trains, agriculture and our veterans as well as noting many landmarks via the Heritage District History Walk including the water tower and old depot.
As part of its commitment to the Gilbert Leadership program, Class XXI is partnering with the American Legion Merrill Mitchell Post 39 on this project so that veterans are also emphasized in the art piece. The attached rendering of the future mural depicts the Town of Gilbert in the World War I era, circa 1917, with the exception of the “Gilbert” sign, which was later added across Gilbert Road in the early 1930s.
The goal of this service project is to beautify Gilbert’s Heritage District and bring culture to the public sphere. The art element will be placed on the south-facing wall of the American Legion Merrill Mitchell Post 39 building, located in the downtown area. The class also has plans for landscape improvements in the area adjacent to the mural it will be an open space with park features. Both projects will be complete in April 2013 as part of the class' community project, and a public debut is slated for Wednesday, May 1, 2013.
Artist Mary Opat has an extensive background painting full-time as a muralist and fine art oil painter. She recently moved to Arizona from Cresco, Iowa. Currently, Opat is a juried member of the Arizona Art Alliance, the Gilbert Visual Art League and the San Tan Valley Artists.
Opat was selected among four proposals commissioned by Gilbert Leadership classmates. After being awarded the project, she explained that, “this project will add warmth and create an exciting ambience for all that gather in the new space.” The art display will tell the story of Gilbert’s rich history and highlight present achievements.
“Murals can have a dramatic impact whether consciously or subconsciously on the attitudes of passersby, when they are added to areas where people live and work. Public murals are also seen as a way to add an aesthetic improvement to any neighborhood,” said Bob Wilson, co-chair of the project campaign.
Furthermore, Opat stated that her idea began with connecting the art piece to Town’s motto of “Gilbert – Clean, Safe, Vibrant,” while preserving the Town’s origins and from there she integrated an account about the town from its beginnings as the "Hay Shipping Capital of the World” for many people to enjoy.
“We decided to incorporate a historical component to this project to complement the surrounding Heritage District. The mural will be an attractive art piece as well as a way to communicate to publicly about the features Gilbert has to offer, while conveying the essence of our humble roots from the early 1900s,” stated Alan Fitzgerald, co-chair of project design.
Installation of the public art display is set for this month along with a new landscaped area within the space. Opat will begin laying out her design template on March 18th so that classmates can begin to paint during their project day on April 6th.
Gilbert Leadership Class XXI is still hoping to raise $14,000 through private and corporate donations to complete this year’s project.

Gilbert Leadership Class XXI will paint mural, create pocket park in Gilbert’s Heritage District
GILBERT, ARIZ. - Participants of Gilbert Leadership Class XXI will document Gilbert’s history and key sites of interest by collaborating with a local artist to paint a mural on the south-facing wall of the American Legion Merrill Mitchell Post 39 building, located in the Town’s Heritage District. The class also has plans for an open space improvement ("pocket park") on the vacant land immediately south of the American Legion Post 39. Both projects will be complete in April 2013 as part of the class' community project.
Over the past 20 years, Gilbert Leadership has promoted community leadership and inspired action on issues that impact Gilbert. This year’s class, referring to themselves as ‘The Class of the Century,’ hope to support the emerging art culture in Gilbert’s Heritage District by telling the story of Gilbert’s rich history, present achievements and future plans through this mural project.
The Centurions identified the mural and land improvement project as an opportunity to give back to the community, to honor veterans and to further improve the Town. The site for the pocket park is owned by the Town of Gilbert and will be a space for residents and tourists to gather within the Heritage District to view the mural and connect with Gilbert’s past, present and future.
"We're excited to have the support of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce, the Gilbert Leadership Team, the Town of Gilbert and the American Legion Post 39, to make this project a reality,” said Gayle Disch, campaign co-chair and Gilbert Leadership Class XXI member. “Transforming this space into a place where people can congregate and explore is part of the vitality of our Heritage District. We hope it will not only improve the space but also support the effort to make our Heritage District a social destination.”
This year’s community project offers a unique opportunity to involve emerging leaders of our community. The varied talents, skills and professional experience of each class member will be utilized to contribute to the success of the project.
As a part of the Gilbert Leadership program, each class is required to complete a project that will benefit the Town of Gilbert. Chamber Urges Town Council to Initiate a Formal ‘Shop Local’ Policy for Town Expenditures
MEMO
TO: Mayor and Town Council
FROM: Jon Olson, Chairman of the Board
DATE: January 11, 2013
RE: PURCHASING LOCAL POLICY
A recent article appearing in the Arizona Republic addressed neighboring cities’ efforts to procure goods and services from businesses located within their communities. That article reminded me of previous dialog with the Town’s Council and staff to implement similar efforts and that it was decided it was appropriate to wait to institute a more formal local purchasing policy until the purchasing administrator was hired.
The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce would like to request that the Town Council initiate the process to establish a formal policy that will provide Gilbert businesses greater opportunities to transact business with the Town. Initial recommendations that we believe should be considered are as follows:
• Establish a method to notify businesses about opportunities to bid (some cities are sending e-mail messages to businesses who have opted to receive notices about purchasing requests)
• Publish an easy to understand, consistent policy describing the parameters that determine the necessity of bidding
• Creating an internal departmental policy for purchases that fall below the bidding threshold that establishes methods of researching Gilbert businesses able to offer the service or product and offering them the opportunity to do business with the town through a more informal process
• Provide a competitive advantage for Gilbert business by discounting those submitted bids by the 1.5 sales tax the town will receive by keeping the purchase within the Town – as the Town will be paying itself the sales tax
We believe that the Town Council should diligently establish both the scope of the policy and establish a timeline for the policy’s creation as promptly as possible.
We are sure there are additional opportunities to explore; but, we feel this is a good starting point for discussion. The Chamber is hosting a Procurement Expo on January 30th.The Town’s purchasing administer will be involved along with other large corporations, schools, and governmental entities. Businesses of all sizes will learn how to be placed on vendor lists along with proper procedures for bidding on opportunities to provide services and products. We appreciate the Town’s involvement.
We believe that Shop Gilbert efforts extend beyond just getting the word out to our residents and businesses to spend their dollars locally; we also believe the Town should take a lead in this effort to support all companies located in our community, helping them grow their businesses while keeping those sales dollars right here at home. Establishing a formal process can be the first step in steering more purchases to the Town’s businesses. With a formal policy in place, staff can then begin to change their day-to-day activities to carry out the goal of expanding local purchasing
Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to being involved in these discussions.
GILBERT CHAMBER’S MID-YEAR CLOSED-BUSINESS REPORT EXCEEDS LAST FISCAL YEAR

GILBERT CHAMBER’S MID-YEAR CLOSED-BUSINESS REPORT EXCEEDS LAST FISCAL YEAR
Referral Culture Gaining Ground, Paying Off in Referred Member-To-Member Business
GILBERT – The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce announced a record-breaking report of more than $997,000 in closed business between Chamber members during the organization’s second quarter and more than $1.6 million in closed business year-to-date.
“To exceed last year’s figures during the first half of this year is a true testament to effectiveness of a referral culture,” said Annette Sellers, Business Development Director of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce.

NEW SHOP LOCAL VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS GILBERT-BASED PRODUCTS AND SERVICES
GILBERT – The town’s Shop Gilbert taskforce announced today the release of the second video in a series to remind residents of the opportunities for contracting service providers or purchasing goods made in the Town of Gilbert.
“When we think about shopping locally, we often think about visiting local retailers but we don’t always think about calling on Gilbert-based businesses when we are looking for painting, landscaping or other services,” said Gilbert Mayor John Lewis. “This video reminds residents to think about Gilbert first when contracting for services.”
The video campaign includes four segments with emphasis on different industries, all of which contribute to the town’s tax base. All videos of the Shop Gilbert campaign were scripted by Tad Peelen, part owner of Joe’s Real BBQ and member of the Shop Gilbert taskforce. The videos were produced by Gilbert-based 4th Wall Productions and exclusively feature Gilbert-based locations.
This newly-released video will be aired on the Town’s government channel 11 and as a public service announcement at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. It can be viewed on the Shop Gilbert website, http://www.ShopGilbertAz.com The w.ebsite includes a listing of Gilbert businesses currently enrolled as a supporter of the Shop Gilbert initiative.

GILBERT’S EXECUTIVE HOUSING TASKFORCE RELEASES MARKETING VIDEOGILBERT, ARIZ – The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce released last week a marketing video featuring the executive lifestyle amenities found within Gilbert and will share this video with key industry professionals as they seek placement for executives.
The Gilbert Chamber and the Town of Gilbert partnered with members of the business community to create a taskforce to first identify Gilbert’s executive lifestyle amenities and then to develop a strategic plan for sharing the highlights of the community with others. The taskforce saw an immediate need to reach out to human resource and relocation specialists, as well as executive search firms and luxury real estate agents. As a result, the group developed messaging and produced a video to allow such professionals to share the message with their clientele.
“Gilbert leads the way in economic and business development and public safety,” said Mayor John Lewis. “With the development of our healthcare industry, our strong educational institutions, and our diverse arts & cultural community, the Town of Gilbert has what it takes to be the premier community for executive living.”
With the launch of this video and a supporting website with access to additional resources, the taskforce will now focus on efforts to carry this message to its intended audience.
“Residents already know that Gilbert is a premier community,” said Jon Olson, Chairman of the Board of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce. “We want to further our message by reaching those outside of our community. We are looking at developing familiarization tours and other opportunities to bring them here to experience all that our town has to offer.”
To view the executive housing promotional video, visit http://www.executivelivingaz.com or access the link through the Chamber’s youtube Channel.
The executive housing initiative is supported in-part by the Town of Gilbert, SanTan Development Group, Whitewing Custom Home Communities, Rayons Financial Solutions, and the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce. Gilbert Chamber Supports Higley Unified School District’s Ballot Issues.
Gilbert Chamber Supports Higley Unified School District’s Ballot Issues.
The Chamber’s Public Policy committee and Board of Directors voted to support the three issues before the Higley School District’s voters:
Education is the cornerstone of our community, economic development, and future. Even so, prudent use of tax dollars is important and should be paired with academic achievement for our students. The Chamber believes Higley has done that.
The district is anticipating 5,000 new students by 2019 based on the housing projects in the pipeline that is backed up by the number of permits being issued by the Town. The legislature does not recognize the potential growth and will not relinquish funds for building schools until 2019. The district has also received feedback from their parents to move into a middle school model from their K-8 current model. With the anticipated growth and new model; 2 new schools must be built immediately. The state law does not allow for the governing board to approve a lease/lease back option for more than a 5 year period; anything longer than that would need to go to the voters for approval. The district is known for their innovative teaching models that will reduce long-term soft capital costs which have resulted in excellent academic standing. Their administrative cost is high at this time due to growth and the area of the school is only 6 square miles.
They currently own land for two school sites and have worked with a non-profit foundation to lease the land to the non-profit and in turn lease back a completed school building for 35-years; at which time the school will be gifted to the district. This is a similar model used by charter schools. In order to satisfy the financial institution they have been required to show proof of a 5-year override, increase in capital outlay for the schools to open, and the vote of the people to enter into a 35-year mortgage. The district’s override is not due to go to the people for another year so this effort to secure the vote early is needed in order to put the pieces in place for the building of the new schools. The public policy committee felt the district has worked hard on their innovative models, received outstanding academic success and is constantly looking for ways to bring dollars into the district without raising taxes, such as the pre-school options they offer along with business partnerships.
The Chamber recommends business support the override, capital outlay, and lease/lease back questions on the ballot.

Chamber Supports 2012 Gilbert Public Schools Override
To: Dave Allison, Superintendent
From: Kathy Tilque, President/CEO
Date: September 28, 2012
RE: Chamber Supports 2012 Gilbert Public Schools Override
The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce Public Policy committee and Board of Directors officially voted to support the Gilbert Public Schools 2012 Override. The Chamber is confident Gilbert Public Schools is proactively reducing expenses as clearly demonstrated by the Auditor General’s report. They have been good stewards with the tax payers’ money through successful financial strategies to pay down bonds quickly and keeping administrative costs low.
A successful education system is vital to long-term economic stability for our community. Gilbert Public Schools continues to provide excelling schools, students, and community involvement while protecting against high tax burdens on business and residents.
The decision to support an override is not taken lightly at the Chamber and the Public Policy committee spent a good deal of time receiving information and questioning the district’s request for an override, overview of their budget, and what programs would be cut if the override failed. The district also met with a smaller group of the Public Policy committee to delve at a deeper level into the budget, override, and efforts to save money.
Tremendous savings have been realized through energy conservation and members of the Chamber agreed Gilbert Public Schools has thoroughly evaluated areas to streamline processes, equipment costs and spending while being very open to new ideas and opportunities to privatize if long-term savings were demonstrated and to meet with businesses that may assist in identifying additional areas to save money.
Due to financial cuts from the State, the Gilbert Public School District has trimmed their budget by $36M over the past three years. During this time, their academic standing has increased from a B school district to an A district which clearly demonstrates the results of their efforts to focus on the classroom learning experiences and not growing administrative costs.
According to the Auditor General, Gilbert Public Schools has one of the lowest administrative costs per pupil at $501 compared to the State’s average of $728 and peer average of $613. Of the total $6,369 per-pupil spending, $3,817 is spent in the classroom; compared to $7,123/$4,080 in peer districts and $7,485/$4,098 statewide.

Referral Team Members See Benefit in Chamber’s Referral Culture
GILBERT – Members of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce’s referral teams reported more than $689,000 in closed business during the first quarter of the organization’s fiscal year. This report follows a previous fiscal year report of more than $1.4 million in closed business between July 2011 and June 2012.
The closed business figures are reported on a weekly basis by participants in the Chamber’s five referral teams – industry exclusive groups representing 134 local businesses who work to build strategic partnerships with one another and understand the products and services provided by each member of the group.
“My business has seen great benefit from participation in a referral team,” said Kevin DeRosa of Advance Paper and Maintenance. De Rosa has been a member of the Chamber’s referral team meeting every Tuesday morning for more than six years.
“I have created relationships that have led to not only one-time transactional sales but also the further development of a long-term, established customer base,” DeRosa said.
The Chamber currently operates five referral teams as part of the organization’s strategic plan to build a referral-based membership culture.
According to DeRosa, the key to success in such a group is to first learn how you can help other businesses and, in doing so, your business will find immediate benefits.
“We have moved beyond the traditional networking model and the passing of business cards,” said Kathy Tilque, president and CEO of the Gilbert Chamber. “Our members are actively building one another’s businesses and we see it as the Chamber’s role to provide them the environment and resources to support their growth and development.”

Gilbert Chamber’s Referral Teams Actively Build, Support Partner Businesses
GILBERT – Members of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce’s referral teams closed more than $1,488,000 in business since July 2011 as a result of member-to-member referrals, with $658,000 closed in the last quarter of reporting.
The closed business figures were reported on a weekly basis by participants in the Chamber’s five referral teams – industry exclusive groups representing 160 local businesses who work to build strategic partnerships with one another and understand the products and services provided by each member of the group.
“By belonging to a referral team, my business has become a known entity in the community,” said Dan Sleezer, owner of Maddy’s Pool Supply & Service. “Being part of a referral team is one of the most cost effective forms of marketing. As you build relationships with other business owners, you are able to become a resource to others and you have 25 people selling your business for you!”
The Chamber currently operates five referral teams as part of the organization’s strategic plan to build a referral-based membership culture.
“We have moved beyond networking and the passing of business cards,” said Kathy Tilque, president and CEO of the Gilbert Chamber. “Our members are actively building one another’s businesses and we see it as the Chamber’s role to provide them the environment and resources to support their growth and development.”
According to Sleezer, the Chamber’s referral culture is opening doors for his business.
“I had tried on my own for two years to get into a local home owner’s association,” Sleezer said. “It just happens that I received a referral from another member of my team for this same association. That contact was all it took to close the deal,” Sleezer said.

“What we found is a fine slate of candidates running for Council this year,” said JW Rayhons, Chairman of the Board. “Each candidate brings their own unique strengths that would benefit our community; which makes it extremely difficult to endorse one over another. Mobile-Ready Upgrade Features Videos, Avatar and More
GILBERT – The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce will host a social media event to announce the complete renovation of its website, gilbertaz.com, with upgraded features including Chamber and community videos and an avatar to answer frequently asked questions.
The Chamber is asking its members and community business leaders to help spread the word about the redesigned website with the organization’s first social media event on Friday, January 7th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
“For our social media event, we are asking people to not only visit the new site and one of our social media networking sites, but then to invite their friends and networks to check us out as well,” said Adrianne Lynch, technology director for the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a great way to connect with others and to make sure your professional network knows about your support of our organization without leaving your office.”

Editorial by Kathy Tilque, president and CEO of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 22, 2010
By Kathy Tilque, president and CEO
GILBERT – I can’t say whether it is the sign of a changing economy or just an example of our great community – or a little of both – but I can tell you that I am amazed at the outpouring of generosity I have witnessed in support of our Adopt-A-Senior program and Gilbert Boys & Girls Club Benefit.
This past holiday season, the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce once again sponsored the Adopt-A-Senior program to benefit the homebound and low-income seniors in Gilbert.
The program was an overwhelming success with the adoption of more than 30 homebound seniors benefiting from the Gilbert Senior Center’s Meals on Wheels program and more than 40 seniors living in low-income housing – 74 seniors in all.
In addition, the Chamber received enough contributions to host a holiday party for the seniors living in low-income housing. Amy Thomas of Bruegger’s Bagels donated breakfast for the more than 60 attendees and contributions from The Little Clinic, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center and other Chamber members allowed us to give goody bags to each of the residents. The goody bags were accented with holiday cards made by the students at Gilbert’s Mesquite Elementary School.
In addition to the Adopt-A-Senior program, Chamber members and guests joined for A Chance To Give, raising $2,000 to benefit youth needing assistance with tuition for programs at the Gilbert Boys & Girls Club.
Sponsored by San Tan Ford, this special networking event gave attendees an opportunity to make monetary donations and learn more about how the Boys & Girls Club services our community.
I couldn’t be more proud of our Chamber members and our community. It is my pleasure to serve our local businesses and to watch as they unite for the good of our community. Here’s to a beautiful Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

I highly recommend Front Runner to all small business owners.”
The Town of Gilbert was able to secure a grant to offset the cost – normally $1,500 per student – and is offering the program for $150 per student to cover the cost of materials only.

Chamber Endorses Pro-Business Candidates for District 22 Races
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 28, 2010
GILBERT – The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce announced today the endorsement of District 22 candidates in an effort to educate its membership and the business community about those candidates who will best be a friend of business while in office.
“District 22 candidates were invited to participate in a questionnaire and candidate forum”, said Kathy Tilque, president and CEO of the Gilbert Chamber. “Each candidate was scored on their ability to recognize and understand business issues, demonstrate support for business priorities as well as their background and experience. The process also accounted for an informal survey of our members present at the forum.”
The Chamber’s formal endorsement policy and official positions on business issues were used as the foundation of this ranking.
“We were quite impressed with the caliber of District 22 candidates. As a business organization, we were extremely pleased with the depth of understanding of issues that may impact the business community,” said JW Rayhons, Chairman of the Board. “The good news is that the community has a great slate of candidates to choose from which made it quite challenging to identify those candidates whose experience and understanding would best support the needs of business.”
After careful consideration, the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce has endorsed Andy Biggs for the state Senate seat and candidates Eddie Farnsworth, Laurin Hendrix, and Steve Urie for the state House seats.
Written responses to the Chamber’s questionnaire and video clips from all District 22 candidates can be found on the Chamber’s website, gilbertaz.com.

Chamber Supports Local, State Sales Tax Increases
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 20, 2010
Promises to Continue Pressure to Find Further Efficiencies
GILBERT – A decision to support tax increases is never made lightly at the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce. After months of participation in the Town’s budget discussions, the receipt of East Valley Chambers of Commerce Alliance (EVCCA) updates from State leaders, as well as presentations from Town management and school officials, members of the Chamber Board of Directors voted to support both the state and the local sales tax increases.
“Why would the Gilbert Chamber support any tax increase at this time, particularly in light of the fact that this is a divisive issue throughout the entire community?,” asked Susan Brechbill, Chairman of the Board. “In researching these issues we explored the answers to a number of questions including: have the Town and State done a good job of cutting expenses and finding efficiencies; has the Town explored new ways of providing quality services; are we, as a community, willing to accept the cuts to core services; would Town educational institutions and student opportunities decline; and would there be an impact on local businesses from cuts, lesser services or possibly increased fees if the tax increases were not passed?”
Reasons to support the Town’s .25 cent sales tax increase:
Gilbert had one of the lowest count of employees per capita of 6:1 in 2009; which hasn’t grown significantly even with the population boom of the 1990’s and early 2000’s. That has been reduced to 5.5:1 in 2010. (Other communities range from 7.0 to 12.6 in the Valley.)
While we have been named one of the safest communities in the nation; our public safety sworn employees per capita is 1.8:1; again one of the lowest in the state. (Other communities range from 2.0 to 3.4 in the Valley.)
Our sales tax rate would continue to be competitive with our neighboring communities.
Salary reductions have already been put into place and will continue to be part of the decrease in expenses to balance the budget outside of the revenue anticipated from the sales tax increase.
Reduced fire/police response time to businesses would increase business liability insurance rates.
Cost to our customers would be 25 cents per $100 of purchases.
Reduced amenities resulting in a reduced quality of life in Gilbert would be a deterrent to attracting new businesses.
Potential for increased fees on businesses to counter budget shortfalls thereby making it more expensive for businesses that are already struggling to make ends meet in this economy.
Reasons to support the State’s temporary sales tax increase of 1 cent:
This sales tax increase has a 3-year sunset clause.
Two-thirds is dedicated to education. Without this dedication, schools would be increasing school classroom sizes (as an example Gilbert Public Schools would go from a targeted 27:1 student/teacher ratio to 31:1 ratio at the junior and high school levels; which could mean that 40 students are in a math class.)
Potential for a substantial reduction of the Town’s state-shared revenue, which makes up a significant amount of the Town’s general fund, is a serious threat if the tax doesn’t pass and would result in draining most of the Town’s reserve account for future years.
The state-wide tax doesn’t put any community in a more competitive position than the current rate.
The State’s budget issues are so substantial that cutting expenses alone will not be sufficient in the near term to avoid major cuts in crucial programs.
“While the Chamber is supporting the current local sales tax increase as necessary for help with the current Town financial issues, we are concerned that the Town did not include a sunset clause in its ballot proposition as was included in the State proposition,” noted Jon Olson, Vice President Business/Public Policy for the Chamber. “To this end, the Chamber will seek opportunities for the Town Council to reduce this tax increase within the next 3 years as Town revenues increase.”
Brechbill agreed, “We are experiencing glimmers of a very slow economic recovery and believe that an informal commitment to reducing taxes as soon as possible is in the best interest of business growth and prosperity to the Town of Gilbert.”
