Support for GPS Bond, Override

The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce announced today their support for the 10 percent override and $98 million bond request proposed by Gilbert Public Schools (GPS), a measure to appear on the November 2015 ballot.

“Our Board of Directors voted to support the override and bond with the knowledge that the current override expires next year,” said Kathy Tilque, president and CEO of the Gilbert Chamber. “The passing of the proposed override and bond will still allow for a decrease from what is paid today. This proposed measure is not an increase in tax but it is an effort to thwart a further reduction in funding for education.”

The Chamber’s Board of Directors cites the following positions for their support of the measure:

- GPS has served as a good steward of our tax dollars, have continually identified efficiencies yet out performed districts across the State.

- GPS has demonstrated excellent school performance. Quality programs continue to rank as the number one reason residents move to Gilbert.

- GPS is a leader in academic achievement, graduation completion, and percentage of dollars going directly into the classroom.

- A qualified workforce is vital to the sustainability of a business community. GPS places priority on providing students with real-world work experiences and continues to respond to the needs of Gilbert’s businesses through participation in and in collaboration with the Chamber’s Partners In Progress business retention and workforce readiness efforts.
