ELLIOT GROVES OPENS UP AT MORRISON RANCH

ELLIOT GROVES OPENS UP AT MORRISON RANCH

GILBERT, AZ, (June 16, 2013) – The Morrison family continues to implement its master planned community in Gilbert.   Ashton Woods have already opened two models complexes and Taylor Morrison has their Grand Opening Saturday, July 29th, within the popular master plan.

This next neighborhood is called Elliot Groves and sits at the Southeast corner of Elliot and Recker Roads.  Howard Morrison, partner in Morrison Ranch, says, “We are glad to continue our pursuit of creating ‘a community with character’.”

Ashton Woods and Taylor Morrison split the 208 lots in Phase I which are made up of 60' wide and 50’ wide lots.  Their products will continue the now familiar elevation choices between: Craftsman, Farmhouse, Prairie, and Ranch themes.  These homebuilders have been two of the more successful homebuilders in Arizona during the last several years of economic downturn, particularly in the single family residential construction industry.

Both homebuilders have been selling homes in Morrison Ranch’s most recent neighborhood: Lakeview Trails.  Their product information can be found at their models and respective websites.

United Food Bank Achieves Record Distribution
Monthly distribution reaches new number

The United Food Bank witnessed record-breaking numbers for its food distribution in the month of April. It distributed 2,506,102 pounds of food, with about 2.5 million pounds going to its partner agencies and 6,000 pounds being shared with other food banks. Altogether, that is the equivalent of 2,088,418 meals to feed those in need.

This accomplishment coincides with the food bank’s 30th anniversary celebration this month. During its first fiscal year, United Food Bank distributed 536,250 lbs. of food. With this new record, it is distributing more than four times that in a single month today. In fact, the food bank distributed more food in April than it did in its first two years combined. This shows how significantly the food bank has grown over the years, in every way from its food distribution, to its staff size, to the number of programs it operates. In the 2011/2012 fiscal year, it distributed 19,801,662 pounds of food (more than 45,200 meals daily).

With the number of food insufficient Americans continuing to rise, it is necessary that United Food Bank continues to grow in order to meet this need. In Arizona, 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 4 children are in need of food assistance. However, thanks to the generous support of its donors, volunteers, and corporate sponsors the food bank will help these Arizonans. “Though I’m delighted that we are able to provide this record amount of help, I am saddened that the need is such that we have to,” said CEO Bob Evans. United Food Bank is currently on track to distribute more in the 2012/2013 fiscal year than it did in the first six years of its history combined.

2012 Winner Giving Families of Terminally-Ill Children a Chance to Tell “Story of Me” With New Multimedia Room

PHOENIX — May 7, 2012 — As the amount of nonprofits increase nationwide – with one organization for every 175 Americans, according to the Nonprofit Almanac 2012 – the need to maintain program funding is also increasing. To alleviate the need locally, nonprofit organizations can now apply for the $100,000 Humana Communities Benefit charitable grant in Arizona, sponsored by the Humana Foundation, the philanthropic arm of health and well-being company Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM).

For the seventh consecutive year, the Humana Communities Benefit program will award a one-time, $100,000 grant to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Maricopa County focused on improving health experiences or building healthy communities. Nonprofit organizations can apply now through June 28. Organizations in the operational areas of childhood health, intergenerational health and active lifestyles are encouraged to apply. Following a selection process by a panel of local judges, the 2013 grant winner will be announced at a celebratory event in October.

“There are so many deserving Phoenix-area nonprofits doing what they can to improve the health and well-being of the community,” said Curt Howell, president of Humana’s Employer Group segment in Arizona and co-chairperson of this year’s charitable-awards program.  “By offering the $100,000 Humana Communities Benefit grant, we are helping a deserving organization continue its positive impact in our community.”

The Humana Communities Benefit program in Arizona awarded the 2012 grant to Ryan House, a nonprofit organization providing respite and palliative care to children with life-threatening conditions. The organization is using the $100,000 grant to transform a simple computer room into a state-of-the-art multimedia “Story of Me Room,” complete with video journaling equipment, voice recording technologies and therapeutic media opportunities. The room will give children with life-threatening conditions and their families different modalities for storytelling to promote healthy communication across the family generations.

“From a community-based gardening program for autism spectrum disorder patients to a new fitness center for people with disabilities, Humana and the Humana Foundation have contributed to the growth of many innovative health initiatives in the Phoenix area over the last seven years,” said Michael Franks, Regional President of Senior Products for Humana’s Desert Pacific Region and co-chairperson of the awards program. “We encourage all eligible nonprofit organizations to apply for this great funding opportunity.”

Knowing is half the battle, so please familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms, and you have a chance to be a hero this summer. If you or someone you know is experiencing heat-related illness symptoms, simply walk into your neighborhood FastMed Urgent Care clinic and we can get you treated promptly. There is no appointment necessary, and we are open 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Spot the signs:
Heat stroke symptoms – slurred speech, chills, hallucinations, throbbing headache, confusion, elevated body temperature, and hot skin with no sweating
Heat exhaustion symptoms – muscle cramps, clammy skin, confusion, heavy sweating, nausea, pale complexion, rapid and shallow breathing, elevated body temperature, and extreme fatigue
Heat syncope symptoms – dizziness, fainting, and light-headedness
Heat cramps symptoms – muscle spasms, usually in arms, legs or abdomen

2) Start off slow and gradually build your way up to your optimum outdoor work level.

JOHN’S REFRIGERATION WINS QUALITY HOME COMFORT AWARD

John's Refrigeration Wins Quality Home Comfort Award

John’s Refrigeration of Mesa AZ was recently named one of Contracting Business.com magazine’s 2013 Quality Home Comfort Award winners.

Their project is a system renovation and retrofit in the 4,000 sq. ft. home of Bill and Aimee Edwards of Scottsdale, AZ. The Edwards suffered from a lack of comfort in their home and were looking for someone who could provide a cost-effective solution. By listening to their customer and doing a thorough investigation of their home and mechanical system, the team at John’s was able to discover that the homeowners had uneven temperatures throughout their house, high utility bills, and a significant dust problem. They also discovered that the Edwards’ home suffered from major duct leakage, not enough return air, and a lot of duct routing problems.

By paying attention to the details, working to correct the problems in a cost-effective manner, and then testing their work and properly commissioning the system, Johns’ Refrigeration was able to solve the issues and create a much more comfortable and healthy indoor environment for the Edwards family.

The Quality Home Comfort Awards is a program the Contracting Business.com magazine launched in 1991 to recognize quality in professional residential HVAC contracting. Since that time, more than 100 outstanding HVAC projects have been recognized. Winning projects, like the John’s Refrigeration effort, will be featured in the July, 2013 edition of ContractingBusiness.com magazine and posted online.

Two Arizona Hospitals Receive Blue Distinction Center+ Designation for Quality and Efficiency
The Blue Distinction® Designation Aids Consumers and Employers in Choosing High-Performing Hospitals

PHOENIX (June 6, 2013) – Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona* has named both Mountain Vista Medical Center and St. Luke’s Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center+ in the area of Knee and Hip Replacement.

The Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® program is a national designation awarded by Blue Cross Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality specialty care – and has recently been expanded to include more robust quality measures focused on improved patient health and safety as well as new cost-efficiency measures.

The selection criteria used to evaluate facilities were developed with input from the medical community and include general quality and safety metrics as well as program specific metrics. Mountain Vista and St. Luke’s are proud to have met the rigorous selection criteria that have been set by the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care program.

“Our hospitals are honored to be recognized for their enduring commitment to deliver quality specialty orthopaedic care in a cost-efficient way,” said Bob Wallen, regional vice president, Managed Care, for IASIS Healthcare, the parent company of Mountain Vista and St. Luke’s. “This designation will help guide patients to choose the very best care available.”

Research confirms that the newly designated Blue Distinction Centers and Blue Distinction Centers+ demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and readmissions than their peers. Blue Distinction Centers+ also are more than 20 percent more cost-efficient. The program provides consumers with tools to make better informed health care decisions, and these results will enable employers, working with their local Blue Plan, to tailor benefits to meet their individual quality and cost objectives.

Blue Distinction® Centers met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. Blue Distinction® Centers+ also met cost measures that address consumers’ need for affordable healthcare. Individual outcomes may vary. National criteria is displayed on http://www.bcbs.com A Loc.al Blue Plan may require additional criteria for facilities located in its own service area. To find out which services and providers (including hospital based physicians) are covered under your policy, or to learn about Local Blue Plan Criteria, contact your Local Blue Plan; and contact your provider before making an appointment to verify its current Network and Blue Distinction Centers status. Each hospital’s Cost Index is calculated separately, based on data from its Local Blue Plan. Hospitals in portions of CA, ID, NY, PA, and WA may lie in areas served by two Local Blue Plans, resulting in two Cost Index figures; and their own Local Blue Plans decide whether all hospitals in these areas must meet Blue Distinction Centers+ national criteria for one or both Cost Index figures. Mountain Vista Medical Center Performs First Completely Noninvasive Aorta Repair in East Valley
New AAA procedure performed without a single cut thereby reducing patient risk and easing recovery time

MESA, Ariz. (May 2013) – Mountain Vista Medical Center is the first hospital in the East Valley to perform a total percutaneous repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Cardiovascular surgeon, Hani Shennib, M.D., successfully performed the procedure using Ovation Prime™ Abdominal Stent Graft System, a system that offers patients the least invasive procedure available thereby reducing risk and easing recovery time.

An AAA is a bulging, weakened area in the wall of the aorta, the largest artery in the body, resulting in abnormal widening or balloon-like inflammation. If an AAA continues to increase in size, the artery wall will continue to weaken and surgical intervention may be necessary to prevent the aneurysm from rupturing. A rupture may cause severe internal bleeding, which is fatal in 80 – 90 percent of occurrences.

Known as the “silent killer,” an AAA develops slowly and often shows no symptoms. It is estimated that one in every 250 people over the age of 50 will die of a ruptured AAA, making it the 13th leading cause of death in the U.S. While the exact cause is unknown, it is more common in Caucasian men and smokers. Other risk factors include genetics and atherosclerosis, the buildup of fat and other substances that can be damaging to blood vessels.

Traditional open aneurysm repair involves a 12- to 14-inch abdominal incision. Standard Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) is performed by using catheters that are introduced using two 2- to 3-inch incisions on both sides of the groin to access the arteries. Unlike the older techniques, this innovative Percutaneous Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (PEVAR) eliminates any open incisions altogether by entering the groin artery through a small needle puncture. Then, a thin tube (catheter) is inserted through the femoral artery. The catheter delivers the synthetic graft that is placed within the aneurysm to seal it from the inside and reinforce the aortic wall preventing rupture.

Typically, an open AAA surgical repair takes three to four hours and EVAR takes anywhere from one to three hours, both requiring general anesthesia. Recovery times can range from six weeks to three months. Using PEVAR, patients may benefit from the use of local anesthesia, as well as a shorter procedure, hospital stay and recovery time.

Rodney Hake, 81, living in Mesa for the winter and spring months, had plans to drive across the country back home to Minnesota when he was told his aneurysm had grown and he needed surgery.  To avoid a rupture during his trip, Hake opted to have Dr. Shennib perform the procedure beforehand.
“This procedure allowed me to recover quickly,” Hake said. “I didn’t even have to change my travel plans.”

“To date, all patients receiving PEVAR at Mountain Vista have been discharged from the hospital after an overnight observation. This is just one more example of how Mountain Vista Medical Center is performing cutting-edge innovative procedures to benefit patients,” said Dr. Shennib.

Experts recommend an AAA screening test for men aged 65 to 75 have a history of smoking and no family history of AAA, and for men aged 55 to 75 who have a family history of AAA. In addition, women aged 55 to 75 who have both a history of smoking and a family history of AAA should consider a screening.

To make an appointment for a screening or for a physician referral, please call 1-877-924-WELL (9355).

The award was open to current United States music teachers, and anyone could nominate a teacher — students, parents, friends, colleagues, community members, school deans and administrators. Teachers were also able to nominate themselves, and nominated teachers were notified and invited to fill out an application. Ms. Hyland was nominated by several of her music students.

One recipient will be selected from 10 finalists each year, and will be recognized for his/her remarkable impact on students' lives. The winner will be flown to Los Angeles to accept the award, attend the GRAMMY Awards ceremony, and receive a $10,000 honorarium. The nine finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium, and the schools of all 10 finalists also will receive matching grants. The honorariums and grants provided to the finalists and schools are made possible by the generosity and support of the GRAMMY Foundation's Education Champions Converse, Ford Motor Company Fund, General Mills Box Tops For Education, and Journeys.

"We are very excited for Ms. Hyland!" stated Mr. Ray Webb, Principal of Val Vista Academy, he continued, " It's great for the world to know something we already knew, that Ms. Hyland has a great passion for teaching music and is an incredible teacher!"
